The Flight into Egypt – Matthew 2:13-15

Reflection on The Flight into Egypt: Trusting God in Times of Fear

Matthew 2:13-15: Following God's Guidance through Uncertainty

My dear children,

The Flight into Egypt was one of the greatest tests of faith in my life. After the visit of the Magi, Joseph was warned in a dream to take us and flee to Egypt, for Herod sought to kill our precious Son, Jesus. “An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him’” (Matthew 2:13). We were forced to leave everything familiar and travel to a foreign land in fear and uncertainty. In this moment, I learned to trust completely in God’s providence and guidance, knowing that He was leading us through the darkness. I want to share with you how this journey can teach you to trust God in your own times of fear and uncertainty.

The Fear of Losing What Is Most Precious

As a mother, my greatest fear during this time was for the life of my Son, Jesus. Herod’s wrath was aimed directly at Him, and the thought of harm coming to Him filled my heart with dread. Yet, even in this fear, I had to surrender my worries to God and trust that He would protect us. I want you to know that there will be times in your life when you fear losing what is most precious to you—whether it be your loved ones, your health, or your sense of security. In those moments, you must remember that God sees your fear and is with you, guiding you through the storm. He is your protector, just as He was ours during the flight to Egypt.

Trust in God when fear grips your heart. I encourage you to place your loved ones and your deepest fears into His hands, knowing that He is always watching over you.

The Call to Act in Faith

When Joseph received the angel’s message, we did not delay. We acted immediately, leaving everything behind to protect Jesus. “So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt” (Matthew 2:14). This shows the importance of acting in faith when God calls you to move. There are times when God will ask you to take action, even when you don’t fully understand His plan. You may not have all the answers or know where the path will lead, but stepping out in faith is an essential part of trusting God. Our journey to Egypt was not easy, but we moved forward in faith, trusting that God would provide for us along the way.

Faith calls for action. I encourage you to respond with trust and obedience when God calls you to act, even when the road ahead is uncertain.

Enduring the Journey through Hardship

The journey to Egypt was long and arduous. We were refugees, fleeing from a murderous king, with no certainty of what awaited us in a foreign land. We faced the physical challenges of travel, the emotional strain of leaving our home, and the spiritual test of relying on God’s care. Yet, through it all, we trusted in God’s plan and endured the hardship with faith. In your life, you will face journeys that are difficult, filled with obstacles and uncertainties. I want you to know that these hardships are not without purpose. They can strengthen your faith, build your character, and deepen your relationship with God.

Hardship is part of the journey. I encourage you to persevere through your own trials, trusting that God is using these challenges to lead you toward His greater purpose for your life.

Finding Refuge in God’s Care

During our time in Egypt, we were strangers in a foreign land, far from the comforts of home. Yet, despite the uncertainty of our situation, we found refuge in God’s care. He provided for our needs, protected us from Herod’s threat, and sustained us through the difficulties of exile. In the same way, God will be your refuge in times of trouble. When you feel like a stranger in your own life, uncertain and afraid, know that God is with you, offering you His protection and care. He never abandons those who trust in Him.

God is your refuge. I encourage you to seek His presence in times of fear and uncertainty, knowing that He will shelter you and provide for your needs.

Returning in God’s Timing

After a time, when Herod had died, we were called back to Israel. “After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead’” (Matthew 2:19-20). This shows the importance of waiting on God’s timing. We could not return until the time was right, and even then, we followed God’s precise instructions. In your life, you may face seasons of waiting, where the path forward is unclear. Trust that God knows the perfect time to lead you forward, and be patient as He prepares the way.

Waiting on God’s timing brings peace. I encourage you to trust in God’s perfect timing, knowing that He will open doors for you when the time is right.

Action Steps:

Surrender your fears to God. In moments of fear and uncertainty, place your worries into God’s hands and trust in His protection.

Act in faith. When God calls you to take action, respond with obedience, even when the road ahead is uncertain.

Persevere through hardship. Endure your trials with trust in God’s plan, knowing that He is leading you to a place of peace and safety.

Words to Reflect On:

“Get up, take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt” (Matthew 2:13). My dear children, trust in God’s plan for your life, even in times of fear and uncertainty. Know that He is with you, guiding you, protecting you, and leading you toward His perfect will.
